What i did was so simple.

I had an old WIN ME machine with a huge 20gb drive.

Cleared everthin goff. New install of Win Me

Installed the scanning software.
Pointed the default directory to c:\scans

Shared c:\scans so all PC on the network could see it. All the operator has
to do , is put in the document , hit scan button. Remove document. Go back
to PC and can access his doc from there.

This shared pc now acts as a print server as well.

Simple and cheap. Providing you have a spare PC

The scanner has to support scanning over the network - I know some HP
scanners have such a facility to do so.

If you don't mind spending money, a USB Network Server will do exactly
what you're after. It's a little box that plugs into the USB device and
connects it to a spare network port, plus some software that gives
Windows a virtual USB port to play with. As far as your scanning
software is concerned, the device is connected locally. I haven't used
one m'self, but I can't see anything wrong with the theory: I've done
exactly the same with RS232 serial devices.

Not a bad idea, only thing I can see wrong with that is the WinME bit,
brings tears to my eyes! Might do the same on my SuSE server box,
saves me powering up a PC just to scan rthen save across a network.

Thanks for the idea!
