SBS 2003 DHCP + WIN98 clients!

I have a SmallBusinessServer 2003 with several clients attached to it.

Problem is DHCP, the clients get a valid IP when they boot, but only
sometimes!

The problem lays with the Winows 98 clients.

Normally the client gets an IP:

192.168.1.125
255.255.255.0

But sometimes when a user starts his/hers computer, they get this:
192.168.1.125
255.0.0.0

And the loginscript will not be run, and they are told that no domain
controller is available!

What could be the problem here??

When I release and renew with WINIPCFG, they get the correct IP and subnet.

There is only one DHCP server on the network...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Regards Martin

Are you *sure*? Remember that most all NAT Devices (like Cable/DSL
Devices)also provide DHCP and even normal LAN Routers can be configured to
do that.

Next time one gets the wrong setup, check to see which DHCP is got it from.

With Win98 it is "WinIPcfg" and have to show all details.

With everything else it is at a command prompt "IPCONFIG /All"

Absolutely positive, I have double-checked this, and when I use IPCONFIG
/ALL to view the settings, it tells me the correct IP adress of the DHCP
server that I am using, whether I get the right or the wrong subnet mask.

I would double check my DHCP scopes and make sure there is no scope for the
192.168.1.0 network with a 255.0.0.0 subnet mask. If there is, delete it.

Hi Eric!

I have checked this, and that's not the case, maybe I should install the
DSCLIENT for Windows 98?

That has nothing to do with DHCP. I tried running that a few times,...the
machines were worse afterwards,...I removed it back off.

Win98 is a lousey DHCP Client and it always has been. I have had some Win98
machine that just flatout would not accept anything via DHCP so I had to
statically assign them. Over the last two years I have pretty much
eliminated them from the network.

That was exactly the solution I want to use...
