SBS 2003 communication with external subnet

Hi everyone,

I have a network setup as follows:


/ - {SBS} - \
{Modem} - {Switch} - {Router} - {Clients}
\ - {Member Server}

The Router, SBS, and the 2003 Sp1 Member server are all on the same switch.
SBS is also on the internal network with a second NIC. The Member server
remains outside the router. Both the member server and SBS have public IPs
(as does the Router). My question is, without using a second NIC on the
member server, how can I get the server and SBS to communicate. For some
reason SBS does not respond at all to the member server (it was configured
while inside the network before being given a public IP). I can't establish
a file share nor can the member server communicate with SBS's Windows Update
Services. The member server is responsible for email (SMTP), web, and dns.
The member server has a copy of SBS's DNS records for the internal domain and
is a member of the domain.

Why isn't any communication going on between the two? Also, I tried
connecting to SBS via SMB file share and was given a prompt but was unable to
authenticate. What's going on there?

Let me clarify: I attempted to connect via the ip and fileshare from a
computer on the Internet, not from a system on the external subnet. When
attempting to connect from the member server, the connection times out with
the following message: No network provider accepted the given network path.
