Saving Problem

I have just migrated from Dial Up to BT Yahoo broadband. I am using Windows
Explorer and MS Win XP.

When I try to save a web page (File, Save As) to my desktop it seems to save
it as a notepad file, not a HTML document. Also the Notepad looks like an
exe file.

Can anyone help as to what this is and why its doing it.

Joy

Why are you using Windows Explorer? Or do you mean Internet Exlorer?
Either way, why would you want to save a WEB page using File > Save
What's wrong with just slipping the WEB page into your Favourites
folder.

and when its on desktop it looks like a exe file.

When you select "Save As" and you're asked for a file name, what does the
"Save as type" box say (just below the file name box)?

OK, a few more questions to help clarify things:

1. Does the file you save actually have a .htm or .html extension but just
shows a Notepad icon, or does the file end with .txt?

2. You say it looks like an executable. Do you mean it has a .exe extension
or that the contents are unreadable?

3. Does this happen with saving any web page or one in particular?

When i save as a page I get a folder with all the gif in etc and seperate
from that on the desktop I get a HTML file that looks like a white box with
a blue line on the top with buttons, just like an exe icon but it isnt .

Its happens with everything i save.

Well that sounds like either the icon or program association has gone awol.
Does Internet Explorer itself have the usual icon? What happens if you try
to open the saved html file? Try right-clicking on the file and selecting
Properties. What does that say about the "Type of file" and "Opens with"?

The first thing I do to a Windows computer is :
In Windows Explorer go to tools - folder options - view
Un-check 'hide file options for known file types'
Why hiding the most significant part of the filename is thought to be
helpful, I will never understand.

You may also want to change hidden files to "show all files"

Now you might see what is going on.

Graham.
