As the subject really, if my landline b-band plan fails then I hear that
there are some pretty economical sat modem solutions out there. I would like
to know one thing though:

How does the upload/uplink side work, I believe the sat modem works off a
dish (40/60cm) - they can even modify an existing Sky dish (by fitting a 2nd
LNB I presume) to work as tv/sat b-band, but are you going to be limited to
landline modem for sending web page requests/uploads etc? Or is it a 2-way
sat dish comms solution???

At around £40/month + fairly hefty setup of £250 or so I'm told it seems
like a fairly viable solution to the "rural" + "too far away from exchange"
cases such as I might be

Any specs/info would be appreciated (not only by me I expect

"The other major kind of computer is the "Apple," which I do not recommend,
because it is a wuss-o-rama new-age computer that you basically just plug in
and use. This means you don't get to participate in the most entertaining
aspect of computer owning, which is trying to get the computer to work.

afaik the most common uplink is via a normal dialup modem.

Lag and latency have been mentioned as common problems

www.satdrive.com

One way Symmetric link. £150 to £400 setup, then £14.99 flat fee!!! 4Mb
standard, software controlled and you can order upto 8Mb (pay more ofcourse)
in real-time,
Looks quite good actually, I might get it just for the blistering download
speed (lag/latency considered)

http://www.btopenworld.com/satellite/

Two way link, high setup fee £999, £60 p/m thereon; from their site:

Based on a set monthly fee, BTopenworld Business Satellite Service means you
get:

.. high speed internet access without needing extra phone lines
.. an 'always on' connection - no more time wasted dialling-up
.. Download speeds 500kbps* - faster than a standard modem
.. upload speeds up to 150kbps** - send large files faster
.. extra email addresses - to manage email more easily
* Typical speeds between 200 and 300 kpbs (150 kbps burst speed).
** Typical speeds will be between 60 and 70 kbps.
Speeds may be reduced by: weather interference and usage during peak times

There are other suppliers too I think, have a search round.
