A friend of mine can't get BB in his rural location. :-(

He has an o2 dongle, but since the latest Hotmail 'upgrade' there doesn't
seem to be enough speed to open the messages!

He's wondering about satellite BB.

Any pointers?

Satellite broadband is several times more expensive than ADSL, cable or via
the mobile phone networks and the latency is much higher due to the round
path delay.

Is it possible to get a 3G dongle with an antenna connector so that an
external antenna (preferably with some gain) pointed at the nearest
basestation could be used?

Can you say that again, in English please? ;-)

If his 3G connection isn;t good enough, it's doubtful that a satellite
circuit would be - even though it will be many, many times the cost.
If I was in that situation, my first step would be to look at boosters
and directional aerials to get a stronger 3G / HSDPA signal, than to
spend thousands on a slow and cripplingly capped sat. link.

I'll try :-)

It is very, very expensive.

There will be delays, if you have ever spoken to somebody in Australia on
the 'phone via a satellite link you will be aware of the delays. Imagine
what that might do to your Internet connection.

Having used one, its fine for browsing and email, but useless for VOIP
or gaming.

Transfer speeds are reasonable. Price sis heavy tho 30-50 a week IIRC
plus a fat install fee.

A quick Google revealed install fees of between 500 and 700 and between 30
and 40 pcm.

Impressive stats:

"Welcome to HUGHES®*. With over 1.9 systems shipped in over 100 countries,
you are going to be in very good company."

I bet the one with only 9/10 of a system is ever so jealous of the other guy.
