I have a friend that is trying to VPN into my domain server, he can
establish a connection but can not seem to get anywhere else on the system
either by ip address or \\server name.

my domain is set up with 10.10.1.0 255.255.255.0 and his domain that he is
trying to vpn out of is 10.10.0.0 255.255.0.0.

Does this cause an issue? He believes the reason is, is after it connects
that when he either tries to go to the server either by ip address or by
\\name that instead of looking on my Domain to reolve where to go that it is
actually looking for these on his local Domain?

I can see him connected and assigned and ip. Others from different
locations (including myself) can connect and are not having any issues
moving around.

Thanks for the help/advice.

Jeff

Since 10.10.0.0/16 includes 10.10.0.0/24, yes, this is the problem. This case study may give you a solution.

Resolution for VPN server and client using the same IP rangeResolution for VPN server and client using the same IP range. Q1: if both (VPN Client and server) locations have same ip e.g: 192.168.1.0/ , we can't change ...

He needs to change his Mask to 255.255.255.0
There is absolutely no reason to use 255.255.0.0,...there is no way he is
going to be running 65,280 Hosts on his network.
When he puts his mask back to what it should be everything will be fine
without having to do any headstands & cartwheels to make it work.

PHIL,

YOU MAYBE BE CORRECT THAT HE WILL NOT BE RUNNING THAT MANY BUT AS HE WORKS
FOR THE STATE THEY COULD END UP HAVING QUITE A FEW SO CHANGING THAT SUBNETT
IS NOT AN OPTION.

THANKS, FOR THE SUGGESTION.

Ethernet efficiency starts to fall off after 250-300 hosts. It doesn't matter
how many machines they have,...they aren't putting 65,280 on a single segment.
It just is not doable. He needs to be the one to decide if it is an option or
not. Let him decide that.

An option is still an option,..even if no one wants to do it.
The right way to do something is still the right way to do something,...even if
no one wants to do it. It is not "on me" if someone doesn't want to listen.
