same card, different computer, different results

I have an older presario laptop, AMD-266 vintage, running win98se. I
also have a new presario laptop running winXP home. I am using an
older dlink 650 (notplus)card. On the old laptop, I can sit where I am
right now and have a fine internet connection. On the newer one, I can
not get the connection worth beans in the very same spot. What gives?

Maybe the XP drivers aren't quite right for that card, or aren't
setting it to full power or something? There are 5 different flavors
of the (DWL)650, are you sure you loaded the most recent drivers for
your exact one?
