http://en.tldp.org/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO.html was last updated April 2000,
long before Samba v3. V3 has broken much of what used to work between OS/2 and Linux, and, from what I hear, even between Linux and windoze. Does anyone know a modern substitute for this HOWTO that takes into account changes in Samba 3? Is anyone here working on an update to it? I'm willing to help test and troubleshoot to make that happen. I'm tired of being stuck on SuSE 8.2, the last distro I've been able to make coexist happily with OS/2. :-( -- "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." Here are my notes how I bodged it together http://www.openhgs.org/moin.cgi/SambaPDC -- Martin Woolley ICT Support Handsworth Grammar School Isis Astarte Diana Hecate Demeter Kali Inanna |

Please share your config files. An OS/2 workstation connected to a linux server via samba. Been working for more than a year with no problems or changes. First set up in Redhat 9 (gods know what samba version, 2.something, probably), thru SuSE 9.1, and now with SuSE 9.2 (Samba 3.0.7-4) The OS/2 side is warp 4.52, but I see no reason why eCS or Warp Server would be a problem here - warp peer has been stable since Warp 3. I'm impressed with your reported experience. In asking myself on the mailing lists and Usenet previously, as well as threads on both by others, virtually everything indicates problems in v3 samba, such as http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...24fb431&rnum=2 and http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...70cf6c1&rnum=1 but there are quite a bit older too, especially on the various OS/2 lists on Yahoogroups. > You might also see the back issues of OS/2 Magazine - I wrote several > articles on how to network linux and OS/2 using samba and NFS. They > both work fine. When? I have some, but have no idea how to find any but the few I have. You attached only two config files, smb.conf and ibmlan.ini. Are these all you use? Since I have no problem with SuSE 8.2/samba 2.2.7a mounting the OS/2 share, I wouldn't think my problem has anything to do with smb.conf, but this is why I wish for a current HOWTO. Since discovering OS/2 can mount via NFS, I don't even try using the samba server on 8.2. My problem is on the newer 3.x sambas on Fedora Core, Mandrake, and SuSE, mount claims to succeed, but the mount is always inaccessible, and I don't see anything in the existing HOWTO that helps. Also, on the current distro versions, I can't get OS/2 to mount a Linux NFS export that works just fine on older SuSE 8.2, and between various newer distros and 8.2. But, this probably belongs in a separate thread. -- "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." I tried a smb.conf based upon yours, but that didn't help: NET2758: The system cannot connect to the server. For more information, type HELP NET2758. NET2758 is a USERID/PASSWORD mismatch. I wasn't really interested in using OS/2 as client to a Linux samba server, unless I cannot figure out why NFS for that purpose is not working. It seems like there must be some other configuration files to consider? Here are diffs from mine to yours anyway: --- ibmlan.ini 2004-11-11 18:31:32.000000000 -0500 +++ ibmlan.ini.samp 2004-11-23 12:23:56.000000000 -0500 @@ -2,9 +2,10 @@ [networks] - net1 = TCPBEUI$,0,LM10,34,100,14 - net2 = NETBEUI$,1,LM10,34,100,14 -; This information is read by the redirector at device initialization time. + net1 = NETBEUI$,0,LM10,34,100,14 + net2 = TCPBEUI$,1,LM10,34,100,14 +; This information is read by the redirector at device initialization +time. The ibmlan.ini file previously posted came from a running system that copies a file from a linux server every 30 minutes via warp peer, so I'm forced to admit that it looks like it's working just fine. For the record, if you tell the kernel nfs server in suse 9.1 and above to NOT use nfs v.4 (I forget the syntax offhand, check man mount and man nfs), it should work just fine. A painfully detailed howto on doing either is available here http://www.catherders.com/Notebook-M...book-tech.html You'll need to dig around a bit, that page keeps growing and I haven't yet been bothered to reorganize it), or here - http://www.os2voice.org Just do a search of the archives on my last name - it's in there somewhere. By the way, from the error message you posted above, your current problem looks like you have not created a sambe ID to match your OS/2 user ID. And lastly, I know you'd prefer that I reply via email, but without a valid email ADDRESS, it's not easy. I use my real email address and rely instead on postfix/spamassassin/amavisd-new/clam/f-prot. My daily spam received is around .5 and I don't have to fool around with people unable to email me. Mike- -- If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs...
