samba and linux passwords

I am having a bit of a time setting up my Samba server and I am trying
to narrow down the problem. Is there a different between the samba
password and linux password?

Yes, there is. Sort of.

You can optionally tie Samba to the /etc/passwd file, or to it's own independant
password management facility. It depends on how you've set up Samba.

is the independent password facility that you are refering to the smbpasswd file?
