Sagem 800 USB Modem

I am trying to diagnose an intermittent freezing of a friends laptop.
The modem seems to be the cause of the problem, but being very intermittent
its very difficult to say for sure, obviously with the modem disconnected it
appears ok, but then again he only really uses the machine for connecting to
the net.
I have downloaded the latest drivers etc and even tried a connecting the
modem via a USB PCMCIA card but it still fails, although maybe not as
regularly as when using the laptops USB port.
Ideas or suggestions please, suggested investing in an Ethernet Modem or
Router may be the next step, but he could really do without paying for
additional hardware especially if that's not the problem.

There have been numerous threads on USB modem incompatability problems
with anything with a USB port in various groups. I would just get an
ethernet modem.

As Lurch says better to get a ethernet mmodem. You can get a modem/router,
Binatone ADSL 2000 from Argos for around £50 and with their 14 day return
just try it out. I have been using one here for almost a year, its been
very good.
