Does anybody have any experience of the Safecom modem/router, SWBRU-54108?
For a multifunction device, it sounds impressive. How easy is it to set up?
How reliable is it?

TIA
Chris

I bought a Safecom modem/router (can't remember which model) which refused
to synch on my line for more than about 10 minutes each time it was turned
on, even other other ADSL equipment was ok on the same line. I sent it back
for a refund!

Safecom seems to be at the low end of the price range - and you gets what
you pays for - a not very user-friendly menu, and support in pigeon English
from the far east.

I would recommend going up a notch, and finding something from the ZyXEL
stable. I replaced the Safecom jobby with a ZyXEL Prestige 650H-E - and it's
never missed a beat.

That's what I thought initially. I have two switches from them (work OK)
and a USB hub - two samples have failed. But when you look at there website
http://safecom.cn/code/sub/zoek.asp under User Support their guides are
really good - certainly not pigeon-English.

I've got the SAMR-4114 - it was so cheap that it was just worth the
try and I think it's great. I use 3 of the 4 ports and probably don't
need to reboot it more than once a month and that may not be the
router/modem problem. The inbuilt firewall seems to work fine.

The only issue is that sometimes if I disconnect a cable it isn't
detected when I plug it back in again and I need to switch the unit
off and on. Was like that from day one and I couldn't be bothered to
do a return.

I've bought a number of the single port versions (4110) for friends and
family setting up on ADSL. One of them failed after a few days in
service, but the other five are still going strong, one word of warning
is that the firewall is off by default 'out of the box', but it's only
three clicks from the welcome page to enable it.

One observation though is that it seems happier left permanently on.
One friend had his do strange things, he switched it on and off with
his PC, since he's left it permanently on (for three weeks now) it's
solid as a rock.

23 quid inc P+P from ebuyer.

I had lots of email exchanges with their support people - whose command of
the English language wasn't wonderful (but much better than my command of
Chinese!) They kept telling me to update the firmware - and pointed to
various links telling me what version I should have. The documents they
referenced were very confusing - and contradicted each other - leaving me no
wiser as to whether I'd *already* got the latest firmware or not. Some of
the instructions even extended to opening the unit up and mucking about with
jumpers in order to flash it - which would pretty certainly have invalidated
any warranty from my UK supplier.

I'm afraid I decided to cut my losses and go for something slightly more
expensive.

Other people have used Safecom kit and are quite happy with it. I guess it
either works or it doesn't - and if it doesn't, you're pretty much stuffed.

I installed once recently for a friend whose only machine was a laptop
which had been connected via a BT-supplied USB modem in an inconvenient
place in their house. It was very straightforward to set up and has
been rock solid for nearly a month now. It has recovered without
intervention from a number of problems on their ADSL line, whereas
other routers I have used sometimes require manual restarts in these
cases.

One feature I liked was that it allows you to punch a hole in the
firewall to allow a single external address to access the
web-based management interface, which is usually only visible
on the LAN side. This makes it straightforward for me to get
at the router's admin pages from my home, which is handy as I
can't always visit them to sort out problems. I can also get it
to send its logs to me by email or via syslog. But as it hasn't
had problems, I haven't needed to make use of the external access.

The manuals were comprehensive and better than a number of others
I have seen from more well-known names.

Doesn't guarantee it will work for you but I was happy.

I don't believe this has an ADSL modem in it, as their diagram shows a
separate cable modem to have the ISP connection (see steps 1, 2 at
<http://safecom.cn/code/product/sw/SWBRU-54108/>)

Sorry, not used the model in question, so cannot comment on it. Peter.

UK ADSL <http://tinyurl.com/dghgq> - Happy to save cash with Plus.Net!

Unsuitable for heavy downloaders, but fine for video/audio streaming.

Woops, you are right. I looked at the numeric part of the model
number but not the alphabetic part. SWBRU-54108 doesn't have the
built-in modem. SWAMRU-54108 does and that's what I had commented
on above.

{hello again peter}

Kevin:
You actually answered the question that I intended to ask!!!
My typing error. I am actually interested in the one that you have, with
the ADSL modem in it, namely the SWAMRU-54108.

Thanks
Chris
