Rural Community tendering for RDA assisted Broadband

The area I live in (rural East Yorkshire) has 175 addresses on the BT
Exchange. We were told we would not get ADSL with the technology currently
available (from BT).

We have a grant from the local Rural Development Agency and are about to
request tenders.

We have surveyed all addresses (via a questionnaire) and got back firm
commitments to broadband from 27 addresses, which we are told is enough to
go ahead.

The chosen companies to tender are:

http://www.langreen.com/

http://www.langtoft.net/

http://www.ehotspot.co.uk/

http://www.neoeon.com/

The Parish Councils involved in getting this going do not seem to have a
great deal of technical expertise, or understand the difference between
Satellite Broadband and Wireless Broadband and ADSL.

I have only a slightly better appreciation, but I am trying to do some
research.

Any advice on:

1. Where to learn about the (possible) different technologies these
companies would employ, would be useful.

2. Any experience/feedback (positive or negative) about other community
systems set up by these companies would be very helpful.

3. Any other advice from rural parishes that have been through this process.

Exactly which exchange are you on? The distance (line loss) requirements
have recently been relaxed. Driffield exchange is already enabled.

Tibthorpe. Distance/line loss doesn't apply

This is one of the exchanges BT say may be enabled under a community scheme.
I suggest you contact them and ask for more details. Try putting you number
into the BT checker and it will tell you more.

Hi,

If you have funding then why not just approch BT to see if they will now
enable the exchange for ADSL?

The main reasons for BT not enabling are usually costs, not the technical
issues, unless you know different?

Kind Regards

Simon

Yorkshire Forward (The RDA) won't pay the grant to BT apparently.

The BT ADSL 'Exchange Activate' is £25k and needs an ISP to pull
together an exclusive connection deal at the same time.
A quick spin through the prospective suppliers quoted suggests about
£150*27 = £4k for all the installations of those wireless broadband systems.
