Running a fax machine on an ADSL-enabled line

A customer has reported to me that his Brother fax machine has recently
stopped receiving faxes: the fax machine rings once very briefly and then
cuts out. It's on a line which has ADSL enabled on it, with no other devices
on that line other than the microfilter to which the ADSL modem and fax
machine are connected - so overloading of REN is not an issue. If he
connects the fax machine directly to the master socket without the
microfilter, it works perfectly. He's tried several replacement filters
supplied by his ISP, though they may all be of the same make. He's not yet
tried the filter with the fax machine plugged in but not the ADSL modem.

Any suggestions? Have any people seen cases where lines used to support a
fax and then suddenly it stops working, despite a change of filter? He's
tried a different fax machine, but it shows the same symptoms.

Get a quality filter, not a happy-shopper 99p special.

Fax should work fine.

I doubt if it is the filter causing the rectified loop, but I have met
up with DSL routers causing the problem on more than one occaision...

It's not a Home Hub by any chance??
