Rsync locking up computer?

I have 3 machines with Fedora Core 4 installed. When I use
rsync to copy files from one system to another, the one
machine (now) consistently locks up. I replaced the network
cable, the network card, and still it locks up. I can transfer
1 300 or 400 MB file back and forth without a problem. But when
I run rsync over ssh to transfer many smaller files, it locks up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which one locks up? Be more specific.

I had a similar problem time ago with rsync. In the end it was no more
than a hardware overheating problem not a software problem. rsync can
take 100% of CPU in "random" circustances, so if the CPU fan or
something else doesn't work properly it could lock up, specially with
moderm Intel/AMD multigigaherz "crap" processors.
