Hi all, I read all the post about RRAS, but I don't find a solution.
The problem is, I have 2 Nic's, one for intranet and the other connected to
an ADSL modem, which connect trhu PPPoE.
W2K3 Is a domain controller with ip= 192.168.0.1, DHCP distribute a range
from 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.60.
I need that my intranet connect to Internet (i'ts obvious, sorry), I try
NAT, VPN and nothing work.
I need make changes in DNS or DHCP?
Anybody knows where can i find a tutorial?
I'm very confused, thanks in avance

Hi,

Just a few things for you:
1. DC IP may be conflicting with your ADSL Modem / Internet router (Usually
192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 is the router gateway!).
2. So LAN IP's and your DC should be different 192.168.0.10 for your DC.
Clients 192.168.0.20, 21, 22 etc. (fixed or DHCP).
3. Turn off DHCP at your Internet router Web page or console interface.
4. You don't need 2 NICs. Just an Ethernet switch where clients and server
all connect into. If you are happy for Clients to access the Internet
directly. Point their Default gateway to 192.168.0.1.
Of course you can turn it around and make your DSL/Router IP address
192.168.0.60 or something, then your DC can remain 192.186.0.1.
Lots of possibilities.
Someone else may have a better story for you.

Good luck,

This is not a good idea. Using your DC as the Internet router is not
recommended (except for sbs server, which is designed to work that way). You
would be better off using an ADSL NAT device to connect to the internet.

You will probably need to modify both DNS and DHCP. For Active Directory
to work properly the clients must use the local DNS server. To resolve
outside names to IP addresses, this DNS server needs to forward to a public
DNS service (such as the one at your ISP).

DHCP needs to be set up to give the client machines the DC's local IP
address for DNS and the Internet router's IP address as the default gateway.
eg

Internet
|
public IP
NAT
192.168.0.254
|
DC
192.168.0.1 dg 192.168.0.254 DNS 192.168.0.1
|
workstations
192.168.0.x dg 192.168.0.254 DNS 192.168.0.1

My ISP assign me a new IP every 12 hours or when I reconnect, when you say
"Adsl NAT", do you mean than I must install a Hardware router?
My Modem It's a router but they don't be configured at all and our ISP don't
give us the password to configure it.
I have another hardware router that I used in my office before I migrate
W2K3 Server, then I consider "redundant" to install it since W2K3 it's a
router itself.
Then, do you recomend me to install the hardware router?
How configure them to no conflict with DHCP of my domain?
Thanks, I really appreciate your time

Hi Nando_uy,

Yes, we recommend you install a hardware router unless you already have a
NAT router built into your modem?
As Bill described - those are the IP's you could use. That is your
w/stations don't plug into your DC, they connect to a router or switch/hub.
The w/stations connect direct to the Internet via the router default
gateway.

The WAN port on your router should be set for PPPoE and connected to the DSL
modem. Usually there is no configuration required on the modem. Run the web
page based configuration on the router to set up you login to the ISP. (You
should ask them for a static IP too but this is not mandatory). A static IP
may cost a small amount but it means your clients and staff can connect
easier - to a VPN (using RRAS - it does a good job of that); or if you have
SBS then Remote Web Workplace etc.

When I set up these networks I usually make the DC and the w/station subnet
live in the IP range 10.0.x.x The router gateway IP is then 10.0.x.42 or
something like that.
HTH
