I just setup RRAS on a server 2003 box. This is just supposed to be a basic
setup to allow VPN connections in.

I disabled the firewall/ICS in services first, as is required.

I then enabled RRAS and then setup my DHCP relay agent to and pointed it to
the DHCP server that's in-house. I verified with DHCP that the RRAS server
got its IP block reserved ok.

I attempt to connect to its external IP and it connects to the point to
where its asking for username/password and either times out at that point or
it says that my username/password are not right.

I'm also running another RRAS server with ISA on the network and connecting
to that works fine.

Any idea what could be causing the authentication to hang out at the
"Authenticating Username/Password" dialog?

TIA,
Jim

Prefix the user name with the Domain Name

User: domain\joeblow
Pass: *********

Other things:

Make sure the TCP/IP config of both Nics is correct.
Default Gateway only goes on the external side,..none on the internal side
Use only the AD/DNS for DNS and no other
Make sure the Internal Nic is at the top of the binding order.
Try it with the user's "dialup" rights enabled in the user account
properties,...there are ways ISA can handle them without this, but RRAS may
still need it.

The easiest way to check the server setup is to connect from a client
machine on the private LAN using the server's local IP or name. If this
doesn't work you can debug it locally (and if this fails, there is no way it
will work for a remote client). When that works, you can try from a remote
client.

If you already have ISA server running on this network, how are you
connecting to the external NIC of the new RRAS server? What network is it
in?
