RRAS and SQL Server

Hi all

Ran SQL 2005 on a Windows 2003 server in June that had RRAS enabled and all
worked fine

Trying again now and just can't get the LOCAL terminals to access the server
when
is RRAS enabled

If it's disabled it works fine.

So it looks like it might be a the LOCAL firewall blocking access.

However the normal windows firewall/ICS can't be enabled whe RRAS is and I
cant see any configureation options for the LOCAL card to allow/disallow
certain ports. It is just set to "Private Network"

I'm installing RRAS using the "NAT" option

Thanks in advance

Andrew

Digging further

It looks like it is some sort of name resolution problem

If the DNS server address on the terminal is WRONG and therefore normal web
addresses do not work the <servername> in SQL management studio DOES work

If the DNS server address is CORRECT the the <servername> in the SMS does
NOT work

This is just a small workgroup setup no domains

Thanks

Andrew

The DNS may register two records for the VPN server. You may modify the
regedit to force the server register just one record. this search result may
help.

Name resolution on VPN
Connection issues on DC, ISA, DNS and WINS server as VPN server ...
Click DNS and WINS tabs to assign the VPN server's DNS and WINS. ...

Thanks Robert

I managed to find the problem in the end....the Slightly obscure name
services tickbox on RRAS was not ticked. It only talks about DNS BUT when I
looked in the help it also mentions WINS.

Although this a workgroup on a single subnet it seems that NETBIOS
resolution gets 'confused' / doesn't work if the above box is not ticked

On a side note. When running the setup wizard sometimes the Address/Name
services page appears and sometimes it doesn't. I assume it looks for
certain thing and if it doesn't find them offers the option. Although
sometimes it does not appear when I would expect it to

Thanks

Andrew
