Is it possible with a multihomed (dual NIC) machine to route traffic between
an internal network, and the internet via a router *without* implementing
RRAS - just static routes?

You may want to enable Ip routing.

example, the Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) IP protocol (protocol
number 47) is added to the ...

Thanks. I know about the registry hack IPEnableRouter=1, but was fuzzy
about whether I needed RRAS, or if static routes would do.

Hi Darrick,

Static routes are created in RRAS. You can enable routing in the reg, but
you also need RRAS.

A bit more detail of your network config would help.

In general you can simply enable IP routing in the registry to enable IP
forwarding between the networks attached to the two NICs. Whether anything
actually crosses from one subnet to the other depends mainly on the default
gateway settings on the machines in each subnet. You rarely have to use
static routes on the router itself.

The router will automatically deliver a packet to a machine in either
network attached to it. But it can only deliver a packet which actually
reaches the router. Whether a packet gets to the router or not cannot be
controlled by routes on the router itself. It is determined somewhere else.
