i want to use one win98SE box as a gateway to the internet for another 98
machine (the second 98 machine is a laptop with no network card and i don't
want to spend the money to get pc-card NIC in order to do reasonably fast
downloads). i've connected the two using DCC but the gateway doesn't seem to
want to forward the client's packets. the routing table on the gateway is:

i can ping 192.168.2.104 (the gateway's ethernet interface) from the client
but that's as far as it gets. i can't ping any other machines on the
ethernet from the client. what's up? 98SE must be able to route, because it
does it with internet connection sharing. any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't know what type of Internet connection you have. One of these
web pages should help you share your Internet connection over DCC:

thanks for the ICS info for using windows 98 to share an internet connection
over a DCC connection. i tried it using Kerio winroute and it worked great.
i wonder why i can't run TCP/IP over DCC between an XP host and a 98 client.
then i'd be able to use ICS on the XP machine to share the internet
connection. another interesting thing about the info at
http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/dccadsl.htm is that it said i had to install
netbeui and bind it to the dial-up adapter. i did this and the system
worked. then i tried getting rid of it because i couldn't understand the
need for it. it still worked!

You're welcome, Gary. J. Helmig's site has lots of good information
about Windows networking, but I've noticed a few mistakes there, too.
