Routers and Cable Modems

I have a small home network that uses a router and a cable modem for
internet access. I have two Win98se computers, one WinXP computer, a Zoom
Telephonics router and a Zoom Telephonics cable modem. Everything appears
to work OK, all computers "see" the other computers, files can be shared,
all computers can use the printer and all computers can access the
internet. But recently, the internet connection appears to be lost for a
few seconds, sometimes several seconds before reconnecting. It appears to
be the router disconnecting from the cable modem. The cable modems status
lights indicate no problem. And the router status lights indicate no
problem. Just a disconnect and then after a short time, a reconnect. The
router log also shows that a disconnect occurs followed after a short time
by a reconnect. I don't find any options anywhere for any time out option.

Can anyone explain what is happening?

Thanks and regards, hawk

Have you verified that the patch cable isn't the culprit? It can be a
cross-over or str8 thru cable, just try another indentical patch cable and
see if you get the same result.

I reported the problem to Zoom Telephonics and they immediately said it
was a router problem and gave me an RMA number for a warranty repair.
(Might be why the Zoom 4165 is no longer being manufactured or sold.)
Anyway, I searched around and found a D-link 614+ for $68 including
shipping and with a $20 rebate. So for $48 I bought a "spare" wireless
router. Everything works perfectly, so I assume that the cables are OK. I
have spare cables that I will try if the problem returns.
