Router Throughput Question

I have a Belkin wireless G router with a wired desktop and 2 wireless
laptops. Everything works fine with one minor issue.

My IBM R40 laptop (win xp pro) only obtains about 70% of the rated
Internet speed (2.4 vs. 3.3 mbs). My desktop (win xp pro, wired to the
router) and other laptop (Dell I7500 win98se with the Belkin wireless PC
card) obtain the full speed.

The IBM R40 has the built-in Intel Pro Wireless Lan 3B card. It would
appear that the router is not the issue since it performs well with my
wired desktop and wireless Dell I7500. Also, on occasion, the R40 will
obtain the rated speed.

Any guesses why the R40 does not obtain the rated speed even when close
to the router?

Thanks,
Harvey

It might be related to WinSock settings such as Maximum Transmission Unit
size. Check out TCP Optimizer on http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php .

Ron Bandes, CCNP, CTT+, etc.

I have done all that and the problem still persists.

Thanks,
Harvey

Is the Dell on and functioning when you're testing the IBM ? Just a shot in
the dark.

No, usually the only machine on is the IBM. Interestingly enough, when I
do a wireless file transfer between the IBM and either of the other
machines, I do get the rated speed (real world) of the B protocol
(around 5.5 mbs). It just seems to be an issue with the Internet connection.

Thanks,
Harvey
