BT willing, I am hoping to get a broadband connection (Plusnet 512Kbits/sec)
later this week. I have only a single computer, which I use just as a hobby,
and have decided to go for a modem/router, rather than a USB modem.

I have done some research on the Internet for suitable modem/routers but my
problem is that I don't understand what the specifications mean or what
features I will need.

I am tending to favour the Speed Touch 510 v4 Single Port Ethernet Modem / ADSL
Router, at about £63. However, I have seen that the Draytek Vigor 2600, at
about £140, gets a lot of favourable mentions but I wonder whether it may be a
bit of an overkill for my purposes.

I would welcome advice, please, on these and any other suitable modem/routers.

We have the Vigor 2600 in the office - great piece of kit. But yes, it's
overkill
for you, unless you really dont mind paying £140 for it. EBuyer.com sell an
'own-brand' 4-port router for about £40 which should do the job.

If your after vigor but don't need everything (different VPN passthrough as
oppose to VPN server perahaps?) then the 2500 is basically the same piece of
kit at around £105 inc.

'Overkill' refers to the 4 port ethernet switch and built in firewall I
assume, other than the fact they just work very very well. (not that i'm
biased because I own one or anything).

I would add that it is good practice to buy beyond what you actually need -
i.e. if you need one port get 4, if you need four extentions on a pbx get
one that supports at least 6 if not 8.....

What i'm trying to say is you may get a laptop, PS2, Hard Disk Multimedia
thing etc which would need a connection to the internet in the future so
having the built in switch is worthwhile.

On the otherhand i'm convinced that the speed touch and cheaper will achive
all the things you desire with great ease and save you money.
