router question - sorry if it's stoopid

Hey all, I just ordered what I hope (as a little bit of knowledge goes a
very short way) will be a reasonable home use PC. My quesion is that the new
PC has Vista Home Premium as the O/S. I want to get a wireless router before
it arrives and I'm thinking of a Netgear DG834G. My question is, that not
having used/seen Vista before, has anyone had problems with this router and
Vista.

Cheers

Sean

I've not used vista* but unless MS _totallt_ fscked up their TCP
stack, which seems unlikely, the router is not going to be an issue.
Your wireless card in the PC may be more of an issue as not all cards
have Vista drivers yet.

* I see no point in boosting MS's salesfigures for a bunch of
pointless new GUI features. I'm sticking with XP thanks...

Dependng on your usage & what the firmware version is, in the router,
I think you'll have more problems with Vista than the router...

Thanks Mark, from what I've read Vista is no major leap forward, and I
happen to like and know XP (I wonder how long before a service pack comes
out for Vista). However I ordered from MESH which had no XP option unlike
Evesham.

Your comment on the card is exactly the info I wanted, even though that's
not how I phrased it, as I hadn't even thought about the card in the PC
before you mentioned it, shows what an IT lightweight I am.

Cheers

Networking seems to be a little "tetchy" going by some reports:

problems with:

DG834 yes
Vista no - son's Dell laptop with Vista HP worked out of the box ,
finding and connecting to both the wireless networks here and elsewhere
instantly and without problems - much more user-friendly than XP

Slightly OT, I understand that several manufacturers have gone back to
installing XP.

Personally, I wouldn't use a new OS until it was old enough to have all
the bugs ironed out, if that makes sense..! I have no intention of
touching Vista until XP is no longer supported and even then I'll be wary.
I did a check when Vista first came out, it's not compatible with over 80%
of my installed software..! Much of which is specialist and not easily
available. XP here for the foreseeable future, I think.

Ah but does it work with all the existing software..? I did a check and
Vista isn't compatible with most of my software. Admittedly a lot of it is
specialist stuff but even mainstream things such as Norton (no snide
comments please, it works for me) aren't compatible.

surely if the machine comes with Vista and wireless the supplier will make
sure there is a working driver?

or that magic phrase "not fit for purpose" springs to mind....

Question for Ivor
Does your Norton work with Win 3.1, Win95, Win 98, WinME ?
