Router/Modem choice

I posted this on 18 November but it hasn't appeared in my download.
Apologies if it appears as a re-post.

I've been reading reviews and studying networking cable diagrams, now ready
to go ahead, some comment would be useful on sub-£100 routers and their
compatibility for an iMac and Win98PC twin setup.:

AMX-CA64: I like the USB port as I'm running an old Win98 machine without a
network card as well as an Ethernet-equipped iMac, but lack of reset switch
or means of resetting worries me, as does apparently poor
manual/documentation.

DLink DSL504: it seems this can be configured/reset via 'console port', but
how would this be done with an iMac which doesn't have RS232 connections?
The iMac will be the 'primary' machine. I like apparent easy setup but
review reckons it's difficult to configure.

Solwise SAR715: my current favourite, appears to have good features and good
online support, good firewall and defences, but buyers must check they get
the latest version and review states it needs to be configured via RS232 -
as above how can this be done with a Mac?

In general would I be better sticking a basic network card in the Win98 PC
than opting for a Router with USB port (CA64 seems to be the only one with
it)?
Ideally I wish to run the 2 machines and 2 Printers as a network, able to
send (compatible) docs. from either machine to the other and print requests
to either printer.

Finally is there a Glossary of terms on a web site anywhere? LLC, G.DMT,
DHCP, WAN... etc. are meaningless to me at present!

Thanks for your patience reading this!

Have you looked at the 715+ basicly the same as the 715 but has a slot for a
WIFI card. so you can add wireless at a later date.
The 715 does have com port but is set up via the web interface so no problem
using a mac.

Stick to a tcp network.

There are plenty of people can help with these. I think the newer models
do have a reset facility (but my friend using an iMac and a Win XP laptop
has not rung me for months, since getting online in February or March, so
you can see there's not much need of documentation once it is running!).

Yes. That's what I'd recommend. You should be able to find a network
card for under 10 quid inc delivery (try a local shop first). Then all
you need are a couple of cables (another fiver or so) and you're set !!

You could go for Zoom X4 ADSL modem which have one USB port and one Ethernet
one.
And have look at:
http://www.wireless-nets.com/glossary.htm
never mind the wifi bit, it's got all the networking terms covered.
Regards,
Martin

This unit can be configured via a web browser of a machine plugged into one
of the RJ45 ports, as well as using the console port. I configured mine this
way, the console lead is still in its wrapper in the box.

You can do all day to day config via either telnet or the web interface.
You will only ever need the RS232 interface if you trash the firmware
big time!

(BTW as an aside you can get RS232 to USB converters if you ever do need
RS232 on a mac)
