Greetings,

My Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless broadband router locks up whenever I access
streaming content on web pages such as http://www.cbc.ca/newscast.html

The connectivity is lost and the router needs to be power-reset to recover.

I used to have a 2wire wireless router provided by my DSL provider and
did not experience this. When I switched to cable broadband (Adelphia
Powerlink) and purchased this router the problem started.

This happens from any of my 4 PC's (2 wireless, 2 wired). Other than
this particular type of "Real Player" streaming content, the router and
broadband work flawlessly.

I found a note in Linksys web site about port triggering on port 27960
but doing this didn't solve the problem.

Can anyone shed some light on this problem? TIA!!!

Ben

I had the same problem with a customers router....
Remember ADSL and cable badwidth is lots different
and the router worked fine on ADSL
Example ADSL 768k/256k and cable 4mbs/512k
It only happened when more than 768k of bandwitth was used....
I got him a new router.... Problem solved.... I did try a flash update...
no go, so it was a hardware issue....
Routers only cost $39.95 from Walmart and a little more with wireless built
in

My 2 cents: Never get caught between an ISP and a telco in a pissing match!!
The customer looses every time!!!

Turns out it now works with help from a rep at Linksys. She had me lower
the MTU value and open a few ports in the router admin page. Voila!
Now I can get my news!

Best,

Ben

Nearly any router should be able to handle anything DSL or Cable throws
at it. My Linksys BEFSR41 has worked flawlessly from 768kb up thru my
present 3.0mb.

Here's the email that got me going... The one caveat is type
"RealPlayer" with no space as opposed as the email says.

Quoted message:

Kindly try the following:

Go to the router's web interface of the router. Launch your Internet
Explorer 5 or later version or Netscape Navigator 4 or later version. On
the Address, Search or URL, type: http://192.168.1.1, then hit
Enter/Return. A login screen will appear. Type admin for the password
and leave the username blank or empty then hit “OK”.

Note: If it doesn’t take admin as the password you might have changed it
when you have ran the RUN ME FIRST CD that came with the router so try
other passwords.

If you cannot remember the password, I regret to tell you but, you have
to reset the router and, reconfigure it again. Next time, remember the
password to avoid unnecessary reset and reconfiguration.

Go to Applications and Gaming tab and click Port Triggering then input
the port below and click Save.

Triggered Range Forwarded Range
Application Start Port End Port Start port End Port Enable
Real Player 554 554 554 554 /
Real Player 7070 7070 7070 7070 /
Real Player 6970 6979 6970 6979 /

If this did not help, go back the Setup tab and Enable to MTU value
1492. Click Save. You could play around with the MTU settings by
lowering it by ten and then use the most stable connection.

I hope that this helps.
