Hi

I have a Linksys router in a LAN environment. When I ping the router, this
is what I get:

Request timed out.
Reply from 192.168.xxx.xxx: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=150
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 192.168.xxx.xxx:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 1, Lost = 3 (75% loss
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

Is there something wrong with the router? The internet connection is very
bad. Is it because of this or what? Please help.

Many thanks in advance
Richard

That sounds like a misconfigured network rather than a harware or Internet
connection problem.

Is this the only router in your LAN? Is it the default gateway for your
LAN machines?

Hi Bill

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. The internet connection comes on
and off, so I pinged the router and get inconsistent reply. When I ping the
server, all is normal. That's why i thought the router was the problem. It
is the default gateway for our internal LAN.

Regards
Richard

That doesn't sound good. Have you tried rebooting or power cycling the
router? If that doesn't clear it, the Linksys might have to be replaced. I
had to replace a D-Link after about 18 months. It just died.

The reason for my original remarks is that a common cause of ping
working the first time then failing is router redirection. But if this is
your only router, it looks like a hardware problem.

You might try updating the firmware first. And some Linksys routers can run
third party firmware like DD-WRT.

Could be bad cables. That would be the cheapest thing to check for first.
If this effects the whole LAN then it would be the patch cable comming
directly from the Linksys box's LAN port. Then I'd try to use different
switch ports in case the switch between the Linksys and the Client has a bad
port. I have on eold 3Com Hub that has about a third of its ports not
working (it's no longer in service of course).
