Hi, i have a linksys 802.11b router ( befw11s4 ). It is used to share
internet connection in the following way:

{ INTERNET } -> Win2k Machine -> Router --> Lan to win98 PC
|
-> Wireless to Laptop running
win xp

Previously i had the PC connected to the win2k through crossover and
they were both able to see each other. I could share files and do
things like that. Now with the router in between, it doesn't happen
anymore.

The laptop and the win98 machines are able to see one another and can
use ms networking. The IP address of the sharing lan interface on
win2k is 192.168.0.1, the IP of the router is 192.168.1.100, and the
other two win98 and xp machines are at 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.121
respectively.

Everything is on a netmask of 255.255.255.0 and the workgroup is
WORKGROUP. (Don't try to hack into my system yet!! If its possible,
that is)

I would like to know how i can possibly configure the machines to
leave the hardware connections as they are, and yet be able to share
and modify files through win networking. I have tried changing the IP
addresses of the machines and the router to 192.168.0.x, but it stops
them all from connecting to the net (except the win2k of course).

Any ideas?

-jc

Well, it may be due to you using WEP enabled on the XP machine using the
NetBeui protocol connected to the 11S4 router. If you do have WEP enabled
then disable it, I think you will be able to connect using NetBeui.

However, my solution to the problem and using WEP on the 11S4 V1 router
was to use NWlink IPX/SPX Netbios compatible protcol on the NT based
machines. That would also mean you would have to switch the protocol over
to NetBios over TCP/IP on the Win 9'x machine. Just make sure you
uninstall the Netbeui protocol first before installing the other
protocol.

You should protect the Windows Networking Ports. You can do it with IPsec
on the NT based O/S(s).

AnalogX has a ZIP file that will configure IPsec to protect the WIn
Networking Ports used by a NT based O/S on a LAN but allow the machine to
communicate on the LAN.

Something basic to get the feel

You;ll need a host base FW on the Win 9'x machine to protect the WN
ports.

Protect the O/S(s) from attack.
