I have a D-Link 604+. As far as I can see there is no inbuilt firewall log
to see if anything is trying to hack its way in to my network. Is there any
software I can use to log any such activity?

Not without disabling the firewall on the D-Link. It'd have to let the
traffic through to analyse and produce a report on it.

Not that I can find - no. it has an event log - this simply tells me it has
powered up and connected, nothing else.
