Router fails with Zen Internet

Any ideas about this?

Bought a couple of these:

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/getne...-4-port-switch

Use the setup wizard to configure the ISP.

Try Demon: connects OK, performance is as expected, can send and receive
emails OK

On a different line, try Plusnet: works OK

But using two different routers on three different lines all provisioned
with Zen

Connects OK
Can browse websites ok
Cannot download mail from any POP3 account - Outlook times out
Have also tried Fetchmail - this reports:
fetchmail: timeout after 300 seconds waiting for server pop.123-reg.co.uk.
fetchmail: socket error while fetching from <emailaddress>@pop.123-reg.co.uk
fetchmail: Query status=2 (SOCKET)

Anybody else seen this?

When you are changing your lines/providers, do a reset on the modem
(pushbutton) and then run the wizard ?

If it connects to the web ok then there should be no reason why it has
probs with pop. Do you have a firewall that may be blocking for some
reason, or anti-virus that watches your e-mail, I have had a problem
in the past with AVG intercepting the emails as it was not passing on
the requests to the server and vice versa, giving timeout probs.

Could also be a DNS problem I suppose, do a tracert.

Otherwise have used many different makes of modem with Zen, and never
had any probs. I have not had one of your modems though.

Have you phoned them yet? Little point in paying for an ISP with excellent
customer support if you're not going to use it. ;-)

I bought the one Zen recommended and it works perfectly. I consider
this to be a reasonable approach to decision making.

I'm reasonably convinced it's these GetNet routers - all other routers work
on the Zen line.

I will ring Zen - probably the conclusion will be that the GetNet routers
have a design fault ...

Meanwhile, at the uk.telecom.broadband Job Justification Hearings, Graham J

That affects POP3 but not DNS? Look for something like an anti-spam/anti-
virus setting on the router and turn it off. And upgrade the firmware.

might be that they are ex some ISP who has hardwired the filters to
reject POP..except to their servers. Might be a fragmentation issue,
might be a bug in the firmware.Might be many things.

DNS is UDP (mostly) for a start. POP is TCP. But so is HTTP..

If it were mined I'd have a full *nix networking utilities setup probing
away..but these days, if all you have is Windoesn't, its a problem to debug.

Me too.
I like their support, real people, not "Press 1 for....." ad infinitum..

Same with IDnet. I has a few issues using a fairly rare router. sent all
the setup data on it to them, and they actually KNEW WHAT IT MEANT.

Does the router pick up the correct name servers when it connects?
