router connection causing high cpu usage

I wonder if anyone has an idea what causes the above?

My set up is
Router netgear DG834GT wireless connections
Wireless cards WG311T

The firmware was updated two weeks ago. Netgear support helped me to
reset the router and get back online.
I have loaded and run winpatrol, process explorer and task manager.
The high cpu usage activity remains when all processes possible have
been suspended until the wireless connection is disabled.

I have switched off all other computers but this one and the router.
I have disconnected the router from its ADSL line.
The activity remains high until I disable the wireless connection. Then
the cpu usage drops from almost 100% to a maximum of 5%
Such a high cpu usage brings the computer almost to its knees and slows
it to an almost useless state.
I hope somebody can shed some light on this.
cheers
jim

What operating system?

What task is taking up the highest memory or CPU usage?

I don't think this has anything to do with your router, but I could be
wrong.

Hi Evan thanks for the reply.
Win XPpro, 512MB ram, 40Gb disk less than half full. I run no games etc.

Windows explorer, and if I look in process exploerer it shows very high
levels (40%+) of both 'interupts' and DPC's .

So it could be the computer or even the wireless card? This computer is
supposed to be the admin machine, will that make any difference? I don't
get that on the other two machines in the lan.
Having said that it was bad this morning before I went out so I left it
off. This afternoon when I got back it settled down to idle at 4 or 5%
with occasional ( 8 to 10 seconds) peaking up to 20 to 22%.... much
better.......... until the next time....

set up a network monitor like ethereal and see what packets are being
sent... maybe there is somthing that isnt responding that is supposed to...
the machine settles down when it finally times out trying to reach
something... another thought ... virus trying to contact its host.

I have since solved this problem.
It was the netgear WG311T wireless card. Replaced it and all's well.
Cheers
