router configuration for AOL

As I am not too happy with the interface offered by AOL which takes
too much of the screen and gives a lot of things I never really use
except for email I tried to configure the router so to keep the
connection all the time. I'm using a Linksys Wi-Fi modem router with 4
LAN ports all taken by other computers. I set the router with my
screen name and password and I started using Internet Explorer
instead of AOL search engine with its all add-ons. I presumed if the
router is set up correctly I won't need to sign up every time when
switching on the computer as the router will keep the connection.
This works fine but only for a day or two. Then I get disconnected and
just can't reconnect till I reset all the settings. What can be the
problem? Is my screen name being somehow changed? Do I really need to
use AOL sign up application instead simply setting up the router once
and forever? I really dislike the AOL search engine interface and
would prefer not to use it. Why AOL won't give me that choice?

Look for a setting in the router like "idle timeout" and set it to zero.
It will be in the "internet connection" (or linksys equivalent).

I thought you:

Created a new screen name just for the router and used a max 8 digit
password (or was it screen name?). Set the router to use the above.

Set the mtu to 1400 ..

That was about it (but it's been a while).

All the best ..

Linksys just seem to like to be different, just select "Keep Alive" on
the "Basic Setup" page.

Providing you use the (E-Mail Removed) format username you
don't even need to install the AOL software.
The MTU on your PC should be set to 1450 or less (or if your router supports
MSS clamping you can configure the MTU on the router instead).

Thats what I did. But it may be that I missed the "keep alive" option
I'll try that tomorrow

I found the 'Keep Alive' check box and it turned up that it was
checked with Redial Period =30s
So it looks like it must be something else. I'll try setting up the
router with different screen name now
and we'll see what happens.

Isn't that the time it waits between redial attempts though, rather
than an idle / keep-alive timer as such?

All the best ..

If you set this value to zero the connection will stay alive all the
time.

I very much doubt it. Why would an ADSL connection require you to wait
between connection attempts?
