Router compatible with both ADSL and NTL cable?

I have the option of using both ADSL and ntl cable at home, which uses
a digital set top box with both Ethernet and USB sockets.

I want to use a wireless router that I can use with both of them. I am
more familiar with ADSL which is what I use at work, and I run servers
on it

I am opting for 600K cable initially and I would like to know if it is
capped in some way, as regarding static IP addresses and hosting
servers.

Is the cable service limited in some way compared with the ADSL
system, when it comes to hosting servers?

Is there a router I can use with both of them, or will I have to use a
separate so called CABLE/DSL router (with 4 ethernet ports) for the
ntl system, which I can combine with an ADSL modem with one or more
ethernet sockets, that the cable router can use as the WAN interface?

Hi,

I have just ditched NTL 600k service today in favour of Plusnet but you can
buy an ADSL/Cable router from NTL which I did. I got the one of
www.ntlwireless.co.uk which was the wireless version. It was really easy to
set-up and use and now I am moving to ADSL it also works with that too.

From what NTL say on their literature they have a 1GB daily cap on the
service which I think is very good as it works out at 30GB per month.

I have been with NTL for 3 years and the Broadband service is very good.
Never had any major problems with it but recently the billing and customer
service has gone downhill rapidly. They have been double charging me, then
asking for a switch card payment even though I was in front, insisting that
I was still in contract even though I have bills dating back over 2 years. I
cancelled my direct debit last month after another glitch and rang then up
to make a switch payment. I then set-up my direct debit again after being
assuared that everything was now fine on my account only to find out that
they have once again taken the direct debit which I have just paid by
switch.

So that's the end of the line for them...I ordered my new £14.99 plusnet
account today and when it arrives I will be cancelling my account with
NTHell even though they insist I am still in contract.

Get a router that is cable-ready (ie has an ethernet WAN port) and if
you swap to ADSL, then get an ethernet ADSL modem. Or get a router
that has a USB and WAN connection for the modem side.

NTL don't do static IP but you can run servers provided you don't pull
too much traffic. You will need to use a dynamic DNS service eg dyndns
to map your dynamic IP to a fixed hostname. These are usually free
services and work very well.

NTL also cap upload speed at 128K on the 600K service. So don't plan
hosting a webtv or FTP site.

most adsl is 256k upload. To get that from ntl you have to go for
their 1Mb (soon to be 1.5Mb) service.

BTW the 600K service will be 750K come june. Same upload tho.

I've never heard of a router that has a DSL modem AND an ethernet WAN
port. But its not too much hardship to run with a separate dsl modem.

I believe that the linksys WRT54G will do this.
You simply plug the cable/ADSL modem connection into the WAN port, and
it's done. (bar the config)

Hi,

I live in Galway, Ireland and I got NTL cable broadband two weeks ago
It came with a cable modem that connects to my computer via ethernet o
usb.

If I wanted to connect it to a wireless lan, I should be able to d
this by using any access point/wireless router that also has a
ethernet port and can act as an ethernet bridge (i.e. like a switch fo
cable-based ethernet).

I don't understand what you mean by "WAN port". As I figure it, th
computer talks to the cable-modem via normal ethernet protocol, s
there should be no special cable broadband support necessary in th
wireless router.

Right?

Regards, Chri

the ethernet port through which the router expects to talk to the
outside world, in your case via a cable modem.

Sure, youd plug your AP into one of the router's LAN ports.

WAN in this context has its correct meaning "Wide Area Network". Its
the name of the ethernet port into which you plug the modem.

You're correct.
