Router-based security / parental control

With the latest firmware upgrade on my router (Netgear DG 834G), it now
supports Trend Micro's Internet Security and Parental Control. Apparently
it's two distinct features. Each requires subscription after the free trial.

I can imagine what a router-based parental control is (I assume a somewhat
elaborate web page filtering...)

But what is router-based security? Is it just a matter of checking, e.g.,
that the connected PCs have up-to-date AV software, or is it a real
router-level virus filtering?

TIA for information / review about such features.
