I'm running a FC4T2 box , and for the following info, a FC2 laptop.
I could network very easily when I had a CAT5e crossover cable, but
since I tried 2 regular cables with my router, no luck. I pinged like
mad, and it gave me a "Destination Host Unreachable" error, but the
lights on the router are synchronized with each other. I have a network
monitor applet on the FC4T2, and it even lit up for the pings. I have
no firewall (it's not like I have a wan!), and the IP's are 10.0.0.1
for the FC4T2, and 10.0.0.2 for the FC2, both with a subnet of
255.255.0.0 .

What's going on!
Thanks,
poly-p man

the router's a D-Link DI-713p
The regular cable's from RadioShack
The x-over's from Belkin.

'Destination Host Unreachable' means that the network stack thinks it
knows where the destination is, but can't talk to it. GUI applets
are good at showing what the applet creator thought might be useful,
but often fail to provide concrete information.

What is the outputs of the commands

/sbin/arp -a
/sbin/ifconfig -a
/sbin/route -n

before and after a ping attempt? Look at the contents of /var/log/messages
relating to the Ethernet card at boot time. Is it complaining about anything?
If you still have log data from the previous setup, compare that as well.

Radio Shack. You've got questions, we've got blank stares.

Radio Shack. You've got questions...we've got dumb looks!

Radio Shack. You got questions, we got answers. Usually, "Duh, I dunno."

and the network card is/are?

YOU WILL NEVER GUESS HOW I SOLVED THIS!!!

I had forever wanted to get DHCP running, so I did, and the network
worked fine!! I used an old instruction I found on the web.

BTW:
the cards were the built-ins for a Dell(broadcom 440x) and Compaq
presario 700 (something)
