I'm planning to buy a Toshiba Portege M200

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...il.jsp?comm=CS

tablet PC which has Atheros 802.11g wireless (and also options for b
or a/b/g). I would like to use it at home with my existing PC running
Win2K, and cable modem. From the reading I've done, I think I need a
router (as opposed to a gateway, AP, etc.). Can you recommend one
that would work well with the Atheros? I am willing to spend a bit
more for security and performance features. After all, I am using up
my next 10 birthday/Christmas/whatever presents to buy the tablet :-)

Also please advise if 802.11g is the best bet for me. I live in a log
home in a rural area. I will probably use the tablet in the same room
as the router, or on a different floor, or outside. I will use it to
surf, email, read owner's manuals, cull digital images, and maybe some
VPN'ing with the PC.

Thanks,
Teffy

D-Link makes routers based on the Atheros chipsets. They don't make it easy
for you to figure out which is which, but basically, anything they sell that
supports 802.11a is Atheros-based. I have the DI-774 router, which support
a/b/g. I've been quite happy with it. So far I have not found any deadspots,
but I don't operate at extreme ranges, and I don't have a lot of metal in my
walls. I occasionally have mystery problems where the router simultaneously
loses WAN and wifi connection, and thrashes re-establishing both. When I
connect directly to the ADSL modem, the problem goes away, so I think there
is an issue in the router. But this only happens infrequently.
