REDHAT Linux 8.0

When I login to Gnome or KDE as user "nknight" I can access the local
network and the internet. Even if I "su -" to root user from nknight,
I can still access local network and the internet. However, If I
originally login to Gnome or KDE as "root" user, I can access the
local network, but I cannot access the internet. Not sure where to
start debugging this problem.

Regards,
Nick

That is not a "problem". It is a secuity feature. It helps you from
getting infections from the internet. Practice save hex, use your user
account for internet.

Access the internet as what and how? The internet neither knows nor
cares what you log on as. What I suspect you mean is that some program
on your system which uses the internet does not run as you would like if
it is started from a root login. Some of the window managers regard root
as dangerous and disable various programs so you do not harm yourself by
doing something they regard as bad.

Why would you want to access the internet as root? What software are
you trying to use, and what errors do you get?
Possible explanations:
(a) as root your PATH is different, so you get "command not found"
errors.
(b) if you are trying to use ssh, ftp or other applications that log in
to a remote host, the host might not allow root to login.
