Robot dog unleashes BT's new flagship

A ROBOT guard dog of the future was the star of the show as telecoms giant
BT unveiled its new Broadband Showcase science centre in Leeds.

The new facility is the centrepiece of the company's £20m flagship building
in Sovereign Street and was officially opened by Leeds Central MP, Hilary
Benn.
It has been designed to demonstrate how broadband technology can change the
way we live and work.

And on hand to give just one example was the dog-robot, which is controlled
by wireless technology using software on a PC.

The dog can be made to sit, stand, lie down, dance, and chase a ball around
the room. A camera in its head enables its operator to see on the PC what it
can "see."

While the application may be seen as just a gimmick at the moment, BT chiefs
say the potential is there to develop it as a home security device.

The new Leeds facility is one of only three in the UK. The others are at BT
Centre in London and the company's research and development facility at
Adastral Park in Suffolk.

Brian Greenwood, BT regional director for Yorkshire and the Humber, said:
"The Broadband Showcase is one of the tools we are using to help people and
businesses truly understand the transformational power of broadband.

"The message is no longer '10 times faster' and 'always on' but how
broadband changes the way we live and work. It's about flexibility and
mobility and about multiple uses for a single broadband line."

Mr Benn, who is Secretary of State for International Development, described
the new facility as "a tremendous opportunity to demonstrate, in a very
practical way, how broadband and new technologies can contribute benefits to
the city and to the wider region."

I suppose that BT have to revert to gimmicks, after all they haven't got
much else to boast about.
