Roaming profile on XP not roaming

I am having major issues with a fairly large roaming profile which is being
used across a few XP Pro machines on a small domain. The profile is farily
large (~40MB). Frequently, the profile converts itself from a roaming
profile to a local user profile with no way of going back - and no warning.
I even tried using the copy to command to propagate it to the server
manually, then logged on again. It fixed it for the first logon but after
that the profile again converted to local. Changes made to the profile when
it does claim to be roaming in the User Profiles section of My Computer also
persistently fail to propagate to the server (again, with no warning, but I
can tell, because I lose settings that I change).

The user is a member of the Domain Admins group and the profile is stored on
administrative (Profiles$) share, and the folder within is owned by the
Administrators group. Tried enabling the "Wait for remote user profile"
group policy but it had no effect.

This is extremely frustrating and totally unsatisfactory. Any help would be
much appreciated.

Do you see userenv errors in your event logs on the workstations?

Using fast switched Ethernet, without autosense (i.e., lock down all NICs on
servers/wkstas with a specific speed/duplex setting)?

I've seen bigger (working) roaming profiles than 40MB, but I still think
it's wise to keep profiles as small as possible. Have you redirected My
Documents to the user's home directory in all cases (manually, or via group
policy/folder redirection)?

There are some userenv errors, but these only occur if the domain controller
is available and it does an offline logon. I am using fast ethernet, but no
specific speed/duplex setting (what effect does that have?)

There is no home directory set for the users in AD but the my documents is
redirected to a network share and it is offlined.

Autosense is a bad idea - can cause the NIC to 'flop' back and forth trying
to decide on a setting. Lock all NICs (servers & workstations) down at a
specific speed & duplex setting.

Changing this setting has not fixed the problem. Changes are also not
getting uploaded (as before).

How big are the profiles in question? If you disable offline files does it
make any difference?

No userenv errors at all while the DC is up?

Hi,

The profile is currently 51 MB (can probably be trimmed to about 39 MB - it
seems to have blown out to 51MB today). It seems that it sometimes roams,
sometimes does not, and when it roams, it doesn't upload any changes so it
is constantly losing settings.

I am using offline files for the My Documents folder which is about 2GB - I
don't really want to use it for the rest of the profile because of the
unreliability of it - e.g. if it corrupts when the network is dropped I
suddenly lose my whole desktop or quick launch bar. Btw there are no files
of any significant size on the desktop.

I should also point out that this machine is a laptop - so when the profile
does decide to roam, and it is offline, a Userenv error does occur and I get
an error message when I try to log on - because obviously it cannot see the
network path. When it is connected to the network again there are no Userenv
errors.

Regards,
Edward

Still does not work. Recreated the profile twice and the stupid thing just
refuses to roam. This is incredibly time-wasting and frustrating. Seems that
XP and roaming profiles are allergic to each other.

Cannot recreate the user account because it has an Exchange mailbox.
