I've just acquired a second-hand Research Machines CY25 laptop with a
duff external power-supply. The polarity isn't documented on the box or
in the manual. Can anyone confirm whether the polarity is the same as is
used by Toshiba laptops. I know the voltage is the same.

Why not cut off the DC connector with about 4 inches of cable, strip off
the outer insulation and do a colour/continuity check between the
stripped cable ends and the plug?

Why not ask RM? Alternatively, if the laptop has any ports on it
(serial, parallel, USB etc.) the earth connection on those will be
connected to the negative connection on the power supply socket and also
the negative battery connection.
