RJ45 voltage?

I have a RJ45 cable running from my basement to 2nd floor.
When I connect this cable to my PC which has an IBM 10/100 and a
netgear NIC, on either of these cards, although the link is
established (blinking lights, ipconfig) I cannot connect to my LAN (no
ping).

When I connect this cable to my laptop nic, I can connect
successfully.
When I connect this cable to my linksys router, I can connect
successfully.
(everything works)

But no successfull connection when hooked up to my PC.

What could be the cause?
Does the PC NIC require more power?
I'm wondering if the cable got damaged somewhere along the run, it
does go thru some walls and stuff.
This cable used to work fine previously (like a year ago). I haven't
used it recently and was trying it.

Looking for some suggestions.
TIA

It's probably wired wrong (e.g. with the wires connected in a way
that violates the pairings required by the standard). Some cards
are more tolerant of that than others.

Indeed. Look into your plugs and check the key pairs are wired as
pairs. With the RJ45 plug in yer hand, the cable coming from the
bottom and the clup at the back you should have (left to right)

Pin 1 and pin 2 as a 'pair (say blue / blue & white)
Then pins 3 and 6 (SIX) (say orange / orange & white).

If not wired as above it could be 'ok' at 10M or short distances.

It dosen't matter about the other wires for std ethernet

And / or the laptop might be 10M whereas the PC could be 10/100 ?

Are you using DHCP or static?

All the best ..
