I'm replacing Home Highway with Broadband. When the HH to PSTN conversion
is complete and Broadband has been connected, as none of the rest of the
house requires ADSL, I'm going to fit a BT Faceplate Filter, which I
understand should remove the need for seperate filters for each extension
phone.

The BT box with the new faceplate will be where the HH box currently is
which is some way away from the PC. Currently the HH box is connected to
the PC with a cable with RJ45 connectors at each end ie both into the HH box
and computer. RJ45 seems to fit into the ADSL Faceplate and the
instructions say RJ45 or RJ11 - but everywhere else I've read it's just
RJ11.

Is it safe to use the existing RJ45 cable?

Sorry if this is a daft / overcautious question!

K.

There are 2 versions of the face plate. The older one with RJ45 and the
newer one that has RJ11. If yours has RJ45 then the existing cable
should be fine.

Thanks,

I'm waiting for the modem delivery! Generally, do ADSL USB modems have and
RJ45 or RJ11 socket please? I guess if it's RJ11 which is smaller that
RJ45 - I'll need an adapter?

RJ11 is commonly used with with phone equipment and your modem will
come with a RJ11 plug.
Basically you need a 1-1, (i.e. pin 1 to pin 2, pin 2 to pin 2 etc..),
category 5e patch lead with a 1-1 female-female RJ45 coupler. You can
plug the modem lead into this no problem.
Or, as I usually do, is fit a cat5e socket by the pc and then run a
cat5e cable to the faceplate and stick an RJ45 plug on.

Thanks,

Forgive me checking .....

I can't rewire for reasons that I won't bore you with. So if I have an RJ45
cable coming from the faceplate with an RJ45 male by the modem - I'll need
to find an RJ45 to RJ11 connector? What will the

I've done a search and can find RJ45 to RJ45 connectors, and RJ11 to RJ11
connectors - but no RJ11 female to RJ11 female. Do these exist or am I
stumped!?

Use RJ45 to RJ45, the RJ11 plug will fit it fine. It's what I've been
known to use, it's the easiest option, as you have discovered, they're
more readily available.

modem cables are RJ11 usually, the RJ11 plug sits neatly in the middle
of an RJ45 socket - no adaptor required.

No need, as already said get an RJ11>RJ11 male patch lead, one end into the
faceplate and other into the modem. An RJ11 plug will do into an RJ45 or
RJ11 socket without any problem at all, they are meant to.
