Group;

I have this new vonage phone system that uses a Linksys router for my
network and the phone router. In the config of the router is RIP and RIP2.
I have a RedHat 7.2 server in the basement which connects to a hub, which in
turn connects to an 8 port switch, which in turn connects to the new Linksys
phone router. The phone router should run my DHCP according to vonage, so I
let it. The trouble is that my basement machines can't "see" the internet.
I can ping addresses on the internet, but I can't surf . Would enabling RIP
help solve this problem? Would it have any security impacts?

Thanks. Looking up RIP on google doesn't educate me enough.

Doug

Can you ping anything by name (as opposed to IP address?) If so, maybe you
have some problem with ports being blocked in a router config. If you
can't, it sounds like name service (DNS) problems.

Unlikely; RIP is a protocol for passing packet routing information around.
If ping packets can reach the Internet, that issue must have been solved.

You might be able to get somewhere by using tcpdump or some other packet
sniffer tool to see where things are going wrong.
