Reverting to a modem :)

Back in the last millennium I switched to broadband and have been
using it ever since quite happily.

Today a new PC has arrived for a friend (from the Dell Outlet - a Dell
was requested, and they wanted XP not Vista) and I am going through
the process of setting it up and downloading all the latest Windows
Updates using the broadband connection.

All is working fine and dandy. My next step is to put in an internal
modem for them to be able to use on dialup

So, I will install the modem and drivers. How do I then tell the PC to
dial out for the internet instead of, er, just being always connected!

Many thanks

In IE it's tools > internet options > connections > check "dial whenever
a network connection is not present"

You can also add a dial up connection from there, or you can do it via
the "new connection wizard" in start > programs > accessories >
communications.

I should say, I wouldn't personally check the "dial whenever no network"
box in IE, as it can get annoying if you don't want it to try dial up
every time you launch IE when you're not on a network. I'd just set IE
to never dial a connection, create a shortcut to the dial up connection
you create and tell the user to launch that before they want to go
online via dialup.

Thanks for the tips - very much appreciated, I'll be sorted soon!

I'm obviously headed for being a 'senior citizen' - I clearly remember
downloading (very very very slowly) webpages over a 2400 bps modem onto a
386 with a whole 2MB of RAM[1]. I later 'upgraded' to 9600 bps (iirc) on a
486 with a bit more memory. Brother was that fast!

[1] Worthy of mention that the dreaded AOL was the only TCP handler that I
could get to fucntion properly on that early machine, fortunately I never
posted to newsgroups in those days, the BBS scene was my thing then. Real
lucky I guess, an AOL IP wouldn't have been the best start

"2400? That was FAST!" My online fun at home in the mid 80's with a
Sinclair QL with a "three part" modem - the dialler, modem and
interface to the computer were "separate". That would work at either
300, or 1200/75. Was used to access Prestel, Micronet and Shades.

Those were the days!
