Hi. We are currently setting up a reverse lookup zone(s) on our Windows
2003 DC(s) which also hosts DNS. Our network contains mainly 2000, XP
clients with 2000 & 2003 servers Our network is of small-medium size with
5-10 subnets e.g. 205.1.1.x to 20.1.1.20.x/24

If possible could anyone advise whether we should create individual reverse
lookup zones for each subnet ie. 205.1.1.x, 205.1.2.x etc or whether we
should create 205.1.x.x to accomodate all zones ?

Alex.

Use a zone for each subnet, 205.1.x is a /16 subnet, with 65534 addresses in
it, unless you own or control all of these don't include them in your
reverse lookup.

Hi Kevin. Thanks for your advice. Just so I fully understand, if we use
classless-subnetting so that we end up with vlans using 205.1.1.x,
205.1.2.x/24 etc does this have any influence on the decision ? We still
own/control the entire 205.1.x.x range .

Also, are there any documents which cover the reasons on how to decide which
method to select i.e. single subnet, multiple subnets or is it purely down
to the easiest method to manage/implement based on the IP subnets you
control ?

Thanks.

Alex.
