How to retrieve the NIC name

Hi,
I'd like to know which network card model is installed on my linux box. I
could not find anything in /var/log/messages, and i cannot access the
phisical machine.

try 'lspci' -- then look for Ethernet.
or
'less /proc/pci'

You can even try 'lspci -v' or 'lspci -vv' for even more detailed
information.
