I am planning on decorating my flat soon and there is a BT socket in the
hallway with the wire going round 3 doors out to the back balcony then off
to the pole outside.

I want to be rid of this socket, and as I understand, teven though this line
has not been used for probably 10 years now, it still remains the proerty of
BT?

If this is thier property, and I don't want it there, can I make them come
and remove it completly and without charge?

Don't rush to judgement. It might come in handy one day.

I think leaving it there un-used for 10yrs plus is hardly "rushing to
judgement."

It belongs to BT, rip it off and send it to them in a jiffy bag.

If I were you I would remove it back to the point where it enters your
property and mount the box just inside the balcony window and re-terminate
it there. If you ever need a phone in the future you could then plug in a
phone at that point. At least it frees up the messy wiring around your
doors and still leaves you with the line should it ever be needed. It seems
a shame to dump the line just because you dont need it right now......

Are you with Virgin ? Have you experienced (I have) how badly they can c**k-up ?
Tiscali are no better, worse most likely.

Decent advice I'd say.
