Residential Gateway Device icon

Gentlemen,I cannot delete that stupid icon which appears
every time I start the computer.Microsoft has an article
about it(A residential gateway device that cannot be
controlled is displayed on a Windows Me-based client)but
gives no advice how to get rid of it.Pls help.Mike.

Go to add/remove programs in your control panel and, under Windows
components, uninstall Universal Plug and Play. It's not the same as "plug
and play" and not only do you not need it, you won't miss it.

Carey, is there a chance removing UPnP is the reason MSN Messenger has so
much trouble connecting? It has to time out three or four times before it
connects.

None whatsoever. UPnP is a protocol used by devices for remote control and
configuration, it has nothing to do with MSN Messenger.

Interesting. My "Residential Gateway" icon brings up the web interface to my
Netgear router. And I thought that UPnP was necessary for file transfer with
MSN Messenger; if you do that sort of thing, that is. Just curious, is all.

Its not necessary, it just makes it easier so that you don't have to
manually configure the router.
