When a server is setup with a static ip, do you need to go and reserve the ip
in dhcp or is this done automatically?

No, it doesn't happen automatically. A common practice is to start the
DHCP scope at 11 or 21 to leave 10 or 20 addresses for allocation to
manually configured machines.

As Bill says it does not happen automatically and its good to leave a
block of addresses out for that purpose.

I however still go in DHCP and reserve the IP address. Its like a "fail
safe", if NIC goes bad or server is offline for a few hours/days.
Whatever the reason, you know that the address is locked.

I use Exclusions in DHCP to prevent those addresses from being given out. The
Scope contains the entire range, but he Exclusions "trim down" what is actually
given out.
