We have two DHCP servers that have 80/20 split scopes for each VLAN
These have been working well for a couple of years.
However a requirement for some PCs to have fixed addresses for VPN
access out of our network has led us to give those PCs reservations
within the relevant part of their scope. This has actually worked OK
for a while, the length of the leases has meant that the PCs have
always re-leased their address and never had to go looking for another
one.
However one of the PCs has recently been swapped for a laptop. Because
it is aaway from the network for long periods its lease has been
expiring and when requesting a new one it sometime gets serviced by the
DHCP server without its reservation (the minor one as it happens) This
means that it gets a random address and VPN software doesn't work.
Setting a static address on the laptop will not work as this will
prevent it connecting at other sites with different VLANs.
I was wondering if I could add the same address/s to the minor scope as
well as the major scope and reserve them (by MAC) on both. That way,
although duplicated, only one of copy of each address is in use at any
one time. From searching on Usenet it would seem that this should work,
but no-one has categorically said that it it will. Can anyone confirm
this?
